Neeps Bridge

Postby Gr8stuff » 07 Nov 2018, 11:35

Please can anyone supply any information as to why the Bridge over the Middle Level Main Drain, (OS grid ref 551070) due east of Emneth and due west of Stowbridge, is called 'Neep's Bridge'?

I have direct ancestors with the surname of 'Neep'. In the 18th and 19th Centuries the family (which was extensive) lived in the fenland area at Tilney All Saints, Tilney St Lawrence, Wiggenhall St Mary the Virgin and Outwell. They came originally from Southwell in Nottinghamshire in the mid to late 18th Century. I have wondered whether the first Neep to migrate was engaged in digging drainage channels, but have absolutely no evidence of this. Later Neeps were engaged in the usual agricultural trades and one was a farmer. Any information would be most welcome.

Thank you!
